Special Education Teacher

Full-Time Opening

Parkside Children's Program

Special Education Teacher is to develop and effectively implement educational plans for children diagnosed with developmental disabilities assigned to classroom.  To work in conjunction with other staff in developing and implementing individualized and group activities identified in educational plans. As team leader, to effectively oversee the daily operations of the classroom, including supervising Teacher's Assistants and Teacher's Aide's


  1. In conjunction with pertinent others, develops and implements educational goals and objectives for each child on caseload.
  2. Completes ongoing assessment of educational plan progress for each child, modifies, revises and adjusts educational plans as needed.
  3. Participates in applicable CPSE and IEP/IFSP meetings presenting pertinent information as needed.
  4. Ensure current reports are completed and put in for filing for all children on caseload in a timely and efficient manner.
  5. Coordinates the overall educational plan for each child on caseload, ensuring that all specified services are delivered as per the plan.
  6. Provides ongoing assistance and direction to all teacher aides, assistants and other pertinent staff in their implementation of educational plans, daily activities, interactions with children and their families and any other issues pertinent to the daily operations of the classroom.
  7. Maintains all classroom equipment and supplies, completing agency requisitions to order replacements or new materials when necessary.
  8. Maintains a plan book that provides detailed instructions for substitutes at all times.
  9. Maintains open communications with all other staff involved in the child's plan to enable necessary information to be conveyed promptly and accurately.
  10. Completes all paperwork inclusive of progress notes, data collection of IEP/IFSP goals, etc. in an efficient and timely manner.
  11. Attend and participate in parent conferences and team meetings as assigned.
  12. Supports the Goals and Mission of Arc of Onondaga. Ensures that your communications and personal performance reflect the Agency's commitment to teamwork, compliance with policies and procedures and respect for consumers and staff.
  13. Computer and office technology skills that are required to fulfill job responsibilities and assignments.
  14. Attends and participates in required Arc and Parkside meetings, staff development and training programs.
  15. Establishes and provides clear and legible documentation and compliance records required by Arc and other government agencies.
  16. Provides other job-related support and services as required or assigned by management.
  17. Completes and submits billing and attendance paperwork in a timely manner.
  18. Expected to conduct all agency business and complete job responsibilities in accordance with agency Code of Conduct and Corporate Compliance Plan.
  19. Maintains parent/teacher communication including home-visits

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree and NYS Certification in Special Education (Birth-Grade 2)
  • Six to twelve months of experience in pediatric and/or early childhood education.
  • General understanding of the CPSE and IEP/IFSP process.
  • Preferred knowledge of early childhood development and experience with infant/toddlers and/or preschoolers.
  • Combination of education and experience which, in the judgement of the employer, equals above standards.
